The Dissemination of Thought

Just because it's in print doesn't mean it's intelligent…

Finally, it’s starting to look more and more like the 21st century in the Sunshine State

I hadn’t planned a TDoT post for today, but it would be remiss of me to not congratulate the Queensland Parliament for passing the bill that will allow same-sex civil unions to be recognised in the Sunshine State. It’s finally a step in the right direction, but between the amount of media coverage that the decision is receiving and some of the comments that it has provoked, I have to ask the question about where we really are with equality, tolerance and genuine open-mindedness. In my current sleep-deprived, emotionally drained condition, the most succinct way I can phrase it is this: why does there have to be so much speculation and debate about whether people deserve to be treated equally in the first place?

Isn’t this the 21st century? The question about same-sex unions shouldn’t even be an issue: it should be a basic right as human beings.

There won’t be any new TDoT posts until early next week, as I’m heading away at the weekend for my 31st birthday. Yes, I’m getting old.

    • 21st century Queensland: a place where anyone can now have a civil union legally recognised, but that will suffer lacklustre curtains in perpetuity.

Welcome to The Dissemination of Thought, and thank you for your feedback.

  2. Couldn’t agree more. Now if we can actually manage to overcome the final hurdle and get the bloody Marriage act changed. One of the podcast that I listen to regularly cover this based on similar issues in the US were a group posted “77 Reasons to support man/woman marriage”. His taking apart of their post was fantastic.

He regularly said why not replace “gay” with “inter-racial” and just see how stupid the statements sound. Podcast with link to the original 77 reasons is here

PS Having grown up on a farm in Western Qld I am sick of people making stupid fucking statements that hick Qld farmers think that daylight savings will fade the curtains and confuse the cows. How is it we are supposed to be the stupid ones when proponents haven’t come up with a new put-down in 20 years. Nuf said, rant over.

    • You hit the nail on the head. When you substitute “gay” with the name of any other group of people and then listen to the reasons why same-sex marriage is apparently wrong, it becomes blatantly clear that the issue is one of equality and nothing else.

I love it when you rant. Welcome back to The Dissemination of Thought.

  3. Couldn’t agree more. It’s baffling why this is even an issue.
